a good vibe for the day in half a minute or less

take 30

Recently, I’ve been traveling via Instagram, watching a friend backpack across Europe. Her experiences make mine seem a little, well, boring. Travel is out of the question today, so I have a choice. I can wish for things I can’t have, or I can try to live an enthusiastic and engaged life where I am. Leading with gratitude, lifting another, starting a new hobby, maybe even learning a new language (if I can’t be there, at least I can talk like I’m there!) - all of these things can help us live a purposeful life, without leaving home. What small thing can you do today to find joy in the life you’re living?

Perhaps you wonder sometimes, like me, why this journey is the one you were brought to. I know that there are moments when I think of all the different paths my life could have taken without the challenges of having a child with a mental illness. Yes - it’s pretty useless thinking. Because this is the path we’re on. But strange as it may sound, I cherish the good things it’s brought to me. I’m not the same person I was six years ago. I am more compassionate toward the downtrodden, more likely to find joy in the small things, and more grateful for the ordinary miracles - a shower without being asked, hearing a heartfelt laugh, watching all my children love and support him. So when you’re discouraged about the journey, perhaps make a list of the ways it’s changed you for the better. It has, you know. Give it a little thought.

Never beg someone to be in your life. If your texts, calls, and visits get ignored, walk away. It’s called self respect. There is no need to chase people. Work hard and be yourself instead. Be an example.

And the people who belong in your life will come find you. The right people. Those who will love you no matter what. Those who will stick around when times get tough, will be proud of you, will treat you well. And will always make you a priority.

Because that is what you deserve. Nothing less.

It’s funny how, in this journey of life, even though we may begin at different times and places, our paths cross with others so that we may share our love, compassion, observations, and hope. This is a design of God that I appreciate and cherish. (Steve Maraboli)

A self loving internal image is reflected in the belief that one deserves to be happy, and is the foundation for meeting the challenges of life with grace, courage, and confidence. It is the bedrock of the ability to feel love and compassion for others. For if we don’t know how to love ourselves, how can we expect to practice it with others?
