Desiderata

You are a child of the universe

August 26, 2013 ~ I think it's safe to say that when you're caring for a child with a mental illness there's definitely a grieving process going on. You have to accept that all those dreams and aspirations you had for your child probably aren't going to be realized as you imagined them.

Just as with any loss, we have to move through denial, anger, bargaining (the "if only's"), and acceptance. I've met some moms lately in my networking that seem to be stuck in the anger phase. Lashing out at anyone and anything, these moms openly express their pain through their edginess and bitterness. I'm so sorry for them and hope they can find peace as they work through their feelings.

I have always loved the poem "Desiderata" by Max Ehrmann, which urges us to see the world and its troubles through wise, hopeful, and compassionate eyes. I want to share this portion in case you're feeling angry over your own loss, whatever it may be: "Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. "You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. "And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should." Read the whole poem here: http://www.desiderata.com/desiderata-poem.html
